Bugatti T59/50s For Sale
Commissioned by Lionel Rogers from parts bought from Ray Jones this project was started in late 2006 as the ultimate retirement project. With major T59 parts bought from Tula Precision, Crosthwaite and Gardiner, Ventoux Motors and Uk specialists the owner set about assembling the car in his home country of New Zealand. Robert Mcnair of Vintage Aircraft fame laid out and assembled the major components, skillfully made the body, wings, radiator and surround, fuel and oil tanks to accommodate Lionel and Mary with ease.
The car was designed and has been proved for open road rally’s and tours as well as hill climbs and track events such as Prescott, Monthlery Retrospective and Lead Foot in New Zealand.
The T59 chassis just accommodates the T50s engine as fitted originally in 1935 by the Bugatti Factory into a standard T59. The car in question is know as the Benoist car, after its driver in the 1935 French GP at Monthlery. Much has been written about this car and event and Lionel decided to build his car as a tribute to this fast track car but for the road.
With wings, head and side lights, indicators, horn and a removable steering wheel for ease of access into the drivers seat, which is difficult in a std T59 many of the refinements have been achieved. A passenger screen can easily be added and a cowl used to shield the exhaust make this an ultimate road car. A second cowl to cover the passenger seat turn it into the single seater spec GP car quickly with the wings removed. The T50s motor with its 4.9ltr cast iron block and Large supercharger and twin Solex 48K carburettors produce a smooth torque curve and powerful performance all while on pump unleaded fuel or the greener alternative bio fuel.
